August 2, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 150. 150 days of daily photos...I guess that is a milestone...not sure how long I can keep doing it.

Deer on the dunes at Fire Island. He was mostly intently watching the volley ball game. It was a pretty overcast day until about 3:30pm.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

That's the only health insurance 30 million plus uninsured Americans have.

For the record, I am greatly distressed that my criticism of another's OPINIONS has led to a vicious Ad Hominem attack on ME. Attacks against the person rather than refutations of the criticism of others were of course a favorite tool of Lenin, Stalin & Mao. It's sad to see this community being used in this way. That's just the way the world is, I suppose. Many people opposed Teddy Roosevelt when he was for outlawing child labor and many opposed Franklin Roosevelt when he championed Social Security. Such is life.

Thank you to those who have emailed me as I do understand your concern of being made a target. And thanks to all who commented favorably on yesterday's photo.

In any event, this has given me an idea for a new photo project. I'm going to see if I can show the faces of those without health care and those who have suffered financially as a result of catastrophic illness.

I rode my bike 23.5 miles today and here is my proof.

The George Washington Bridge from the Palisades Interstate Park. About 11 miles from Hoboken. I had to stand in the roadway to take photos and while there aren't too many cars, there are enough that you have to be careful. Also, I didn't have a helmet and there was a sign that said they were required on that roadway in the park, so I basically snapped a few pics and turned around. The bridge is about a half mile into the park and is above you. It's a tad disorienting...for me anyway. The original plan called for those towers to be encased in concrete in the Art Deco style, but since it looked so good without the concrete, they left it off.

My new spedometer/odometer let's me track my speed and distance.

Taking the A Train.

I have no idea who the teenage mutant ninja turtles are other than that I have heard the name ( I think maybe one of my nephews was into them in the 90s) and I have no idea why these two were dressed this way. But I know a photo of the day when I see one.

I cropped out the other riders so as not to intrude on their privacy if one can expect such a thing on the subway.

The White Horse Tavern, Hudson Street, across from Abdingdon Square, Manhattan.

On November 3, 1953 Dylan Thomas sallied forth from the White Horse to the Chelsea Hotel where he told a friend he had just had 18 straight whiskies. The next day he became very ill and was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital very early on November 5th, where he died of pneumonia on November 9th. He had just turned 39 on October 27th.

Hoboken in the first snowstorm of the Winter of 2009.

I took about 50 shots in the snow tonight, all in black & white. Just trying something different.

I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of snow this year. It's 25 F and the wind is blowing off the Hudson something fierce.

This is my project where I post a photo taken that day to this "Daily Photo" gallery, which is linked to the Daily Photo community on Smugmug.

This project has been quite interesting for me and has had many benefits for me. I see more. I take better photos. I learn about photography. I have no training at all, so my technical skill is non existent, but I like to think I capture some interesting slices of life in our time. This was the first year of my daily photo project. My Smug Mug : Someday I will take a decent photo of this angel. Trust me, it's not easy to do. First, there are the pigeons. It's also a few stories high so you're shooting up unless you take shots from the top of the stairs but then you need a zoom lens. The light is tough in the afternoon. One of these days, I'll have to go early in the morning and see what I can do.

Hoboken : Hoboken is located directly across the Hudson river from Manhattan. It is known as the Mile Square City. It is also known as the birthplace of Baseball and also of Frank Sinatra, who was born and raised in Hoboken. It is situated between the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and has direct access to Manhattan via the PATH trains, a subway independent of the NYC Subway. Greenwich Village is 6 minutes on the train and the WTC site stop in the Wall Street area is 10 minutes via a different route.

Re-Opening of the WTC PATH in 2003 : The first PATH train from Hoboken to the WTC since 9/11/2001 was run on 11/23/2003. Since I was on the last PATH train from Hoboken to the WTC on 9/11/01, I made it a point to be on the first one to run to the new station. I took these photos on 11/23/03. The platforms are exactly where they were. In fact, although they were rebuilt, they were still standing under the rubble.

In the 5 years since the station was reopened, PATH has done nothing at all to improve the station. The exit has been moved 3 times. There are no escalators from the platforms as there used to be, and there are no restrooms and no subway connections. It's a disgrace and a slap in the face to the tens of thousands who use the station every day.

The Easter Parade 2000 (AKA The photographers convention on Fifth Avenue) : Not such great pics of the so called Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue. The combination of many people with cameras, crowds, the harsh sun, my using the Nikon D90 for the fist time and my general incompetence in photography made for for mostly so-so photos.

Hoboken Mayoral Election 2009 : Most of these shots were taken around the PATH train entrance and near the City Hall polling place. They were taken the day of the run off. The first election was a 3 way race a month ago. As of 6/11/09, there was no official winner.

Helicopter & Plane collide in Hudson : A tourist helicopter and a small plane collided over the Hudson very close to Hoboken near the Frank Sinatra park. There were 5 Italian tourists on board the helicopter and it is believed that 3 people were on board the plane. These photos were taken about an hour or so after the crash. According to Mayor Bloomberg, there were no survivors. These photos do not show any debris but rather the search vessels.
