The photo of the day!

This is my project where I post a photo taken that day to this "Daily Photo" gallery, which is linked to the Daily Photo community on Smugmug.

This project has been quite interesting for me and has had many benefits for me. I see more. I take better photos. I learn about photography. I have no training at all, so my technical skill is non existent, but I like to think I capture some interesting slices of life in our time. This was the first year of my daily photo project. You can see the year two gallery here: http://inourtime.smugmug.com/gallery/7530427_zJAuW/1/486314056_XnTHi

InOurTime > 2/18/09 Daily Photo. Day 250.

World view?

Art in the Chambers Street IND subway station. It is part of an art project, "Oculus" installed about ten years ago. The project has mosaics from photos of real eyes of New Yorkers as well as this mosaic. A quick google search will reveal more about the project ( and better photos of it...). My 8/28 photo is of two of the eyes that are everywhere in this very large subway station.

On another note, I saw a nice fat rat on the tracks in Brooklyn, but he scurried away before I could get my camera out. I think I will start a gallery called "Rats in the subway"....hehehe.....

Remembering 9/11?

Did they think the thousands of people who pass through here every day forgot? I wonder who exactly thought it was a good idea to put photos of the horror where everyone who was there on 9/11 has to look at them every day.

I think the photos are for the tourists and are designed to get them to write big checks for the memorial with no thought at all to the sensitivities of those who relive it every time they see these photos.

At one point, they had huge photos of the carnage surrounding the only entrance to the PATH trains. I guess they couldn't figure out where to hang them now that PATH is on it's third entrance since 9/11.
InOurTime > 2/16/09 Daily Photo. Day 348.

Vacant storefronts on Bleecker Street in the Village. Sadly, this is becoming a common sight in our time. There is yet another vacant storefront right next to these two.

Recession? What recession?

The Apple store on Prince Street in Soho was packed as always when I went there today to get the battery on my two and a half years old MacBook replaced since it died. They replaced it for free.

Those new MacBooks look cool and have a lot more memory and hard drive space then what I have but I totally can't afford one. If anyone wants to send me one, email me for my address. LOL.

On another note, I was surprised that my photo of the day yesterday of two women kissing generated so few comments. I was trying to be more interesting than usual.
InOurTime > 2/14/09 Daily Photo. Day 346.

Valentine's Day 2009, Union Square Park.

I went for a walk around the East Village and then walked north and wound up at Union Square Park where I came upon this scene which screamed "photo of the day".

Best viewed large.

Oddfellows has it's Mardi Gras bunting up already. A little bit of New Orleans in Hoboken.
InOurTime > 2/12/09 Daily Photo. Day 344.

Corner of Church Street and Liberty Street looking toward the WTC site. It was incredibly windy today and I think perhaps these cranes were secured against the wind. I once tried a case where an entire building scaffold came down because of high winds.

I was trying to do a Lincoln themed photo for his 200th birthday today but I couldn't come up with anything. BTW, I saw a newspaper article 2 weeks ago about a long lost glass negative of an 1860 photo of a beardless Abraham Lincoln. Even in the newspaper reproduction, you could tell it was an incredibly detailed fine portrait so I went to the website of the museum that the paper said had repaired it and ordered a large framed print. I haven't received it yet though.
InOurTime > 2/11/09 Daily Photo. Day 343.

Construction site, Church Street & Barclay Street, Manhattan.

You won't get to see this side of the Woolworth Building for very long. I find it interesting when buildings are knocked down to be replaced and you see views you won't have again.
InOurTime > 2/10/09 Daily Photo. Day 342.

Henry & Remsen Streets, Brooklyn Heights.

I went for another short walk today. This kind of gives a good feel of the neighborhood.
InOurTime > 2/9/09 Daily Photo. Day 341.

A sign in Brooklyn Heights.

I actually took a short break and left the office and walked around Brooklyn Heights a bit and took a bunch of "pretty" pics. But I like this one the best. I'll put the others in the Brooklyn Heights gallery when I get a chance.
InOurTime > 2/8/09 Daily Photo. Day 340.

First Street Barber Shop.

Hoboken.
InOurTime > 2/7/09 Daily Photo. Day 339.

Ghost Rider.

10th and Hudson, Hoboken.

This guy came out of nowhere but then I thought the image looked interesting so here it is.
InOurTime > 2/6/09 Daily Photo. Day 338.

This destroyed building has yet to be torn down almost seven and a half years after 9/11. It is part of the City University of New York and apparently they are trying to squeeze money out of the City or State by refusing to tear down this building, according to what I read in the papers. Obviously it is a stark contrast to the new 7 World Trade Center on the left. I hate having to see it every day.

Personally, I would have turned the whole WTC site into a memorial park in memory of the almost 3,000 people murdered there but other things are apparently more important to the government agency (Port Authority of New York) that controls the site, although the City University controls this building site, which is not really part of the WTC site.
InOurTime > 2/5/09 Daily Photo. Day 337.

The PATH station at the WTC site.

Similar to my 12/30/08 shot, but different.
InOurTime > 2/4/09 Daily Photo. Day 336.

The old U.S. Courthouse on Foley Square which is being rehabbed. There is a new (circa 1994) U.S. Courthouse next door.
