The photo of the day!

This is my project where I post a photo taken that day to this "Daily Photo" gallery, which is linked to the Daily Photo community on Smugmug.

This project has been quite interesting for me and has had many benefits for me. I see more. I take better photos. I learn about photography. I have no training at all, so my technical skill is non existent, but I like to think I capture some interesting slices of life in our time. This was the first year of my daily photo project. You can see the year two gallery here: http://inourtime.smugmug.com/gallery/7530427_zJAuW/1/486314056_XnTHi

Monument in Trinity Churchyard to Revolutionary War American prisoners of war who died while held on prison ships in the East River. 11,000 of them died during the war. They were held under barbaric conditions and essentially murdered.

The monument reads (on the side facing Broadway): "Sacred to the memory of those brave and good men who died whilst imprisoned in this city for their devotion to the cause of American Independence."

The story goes that the monument was placed at this spot because there was a plan to extend a street right at this spot through the churchyard. You can see the street beyond the monument. The erection of this monument put an end to the street extension plan. Here is a link which more of photos of it that I took today: http://inourtime.smugmug.com/gallery/7260308_JUuHo/1/466658924_DA8x2

So, there you have one my history lessons which no doubt have been missed by one and all.

As for groundhog day, Mayor Bloomberg was bit by the Staten Island groundhog, Chuck E. Hogg, and then went on to predict a mild Spring by not seeing his shadow. However, the Pennsylvania groundhog, Puxatawny Phil, did see his shadow, thereby predicting 6 more weeks of winter.

Lastly, tonight marks the 50th anniversary of the "day the music died" when a plane crashed killing the Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson), Richie Valens and Buddy Holly, commemorated by Don McLean in "American Pie".

Tugboat on the Hudson with the Intrepid in the background.

A regular heat wave today with a high of 51...a big difference from yesterday's frigid weather for sure.

InOurTime > 1/31/09 Daily Photo. Day 332.

Seventh Avenue & Bleecker Street, Greenwich Village, New York.

Took a walk in the Village this afternoon and it sure was cold. It was in the 20's and the wind was blowing. Thought my fingers were getting frostbit.

The fire escape on the building at left is very unusual in that it zig-zags whereas they usually are built like the ones on the right (notice the different directions of the stairs though.) Check out the name and date on the building with the rounded eave.

InOurTime > 1/30/09 Daily Photo. Day 331.

Bike lane, Jay street, Brooklyn.

Trust me, there's no way you want to be riding a bike on this block, with cars double parking practically the entire street and the constant U turns.

Another rushed day in a rushed week and I know my photos reflect it. I'm going to take some good ones this weekend and catch up on commenting on others' photos. (And thanks Irish for the comments you always leave, yesterday yours was the only comment I got so it was even more appreciated.)

Jay Street, Brooklyn.

I think this building looks a lot better through the trees.
InOurTime > 1/28/09 Daily Photo. Day 329.

The old U.S. Customhouse on Bowling Green. It is now a branch of the Museum of the American Indian and also a U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The day started with snow and turned to freezing rain, which I was standing in as I took this shot.

Subway entrance in Columbus Park in front of the Brooklyn Borough Hall (with the columns straight ahead) and the Kings County Supreme Court (trial level court) to the left of this view.
InOurTime > 1/26/09 Daily Photo. Day 327.

Foley Square subway entrance. The Municipal Building is straight ahead.

I am really getting tired of the cold, especially when I have to wear a suit.
InOurTime > 1/25/09 Daily Photo. Day 326.

Closed bank in Hoboken. Hopefully this will not become a common sight in our time.

This bank changed hands several times over the years and a few months ago the current incarnation took over another bank 2 blocks away and they kept the other branch open and closed this one. The other building is even more grandiose than this one.

Still, it's disconcerting to have a closed bank and in such a central location in Hoboken.

Barren tree, barren building, barren sky.
InOurTime > 1/22/09 Daily Photo. Day 323.

Newark Street facing the Hudson River, Hoboken.

I like the way this looks like I cropped it even though I did not. It's sort of like an optical illusion because I am almost flush with the building on the left.
